Mustache Bill’s Diner – Barnegat Light, New Jersey

Mustache Bill’s Diner

Mustache Bill’s Diner was a classic American diner located at 704 Broadway in Barnegat Light, New Jersey, on Long Beach Island. Originally opened in 1959 as Joe’s Barnegat Light Diner in a prefabricated 1950s-style building, it was purchased and renamed in 1972 by Bill Smith, who had started there as a 12-year-old busboy and dishwasher in the mid-1960s. Smith, known for his signature mustache, ran the place for over 50 years, emphasizing from-scratch cooking.

The diner gained fame for its simple, hearty menu featuring breakfast staples like pancakes, eggs, bacon, potatoes, and sandwiches, along with unique items such as the “Cyclops”—a blueberry pancake topped with a fried egg in the center. It won a James Beard Foundation America’s Classics Award in 2009 for its authentic, community-focused vibe and was featured on the Food Network’s “Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives.” Operating seasonally (typically summers, with limited days), it became an iconic Jersey Shore spot for locals and tourists alike.

Smith announced his retirement in 2023, initially listing the property for $3.65 million, but the diner reopened for the 2024 and 2025 seasons amid uncertainty about its future. It ultimately closed its doors in late October 2025 after 66 years of operation, with reports indicating it may be permanent due to the ongoing sale. The 21,000+ square foot lot was relisted for sale on November 15, 2025, at $2.9 million, marketed for potential new homes, commercial development, or other uses, suggesting the diner’s structure could be retained or replaced. As of mid-December 2025, it remains closed and on the market.
