The End of an Era: Closure and Demolition
- Announcement of Shutdown: In 2021, Mondelēz International, Nabisco’s parent company, revealed plans to close the plant permanently. The decision stemmed from the facility’s advanced age and inefficient production setup, with operations being shifted to consolidate East Coast manufacturing in Virginia.
- Final Operations and Layoffs: Production wrapped up in July 2021, resulting in the layoff of around 600 employees.
- Property Sale: Later that year, Mondelēz sold the expansive 39-acre site to Greek Development for $146 million.
- Demolition and Redevelopment: Following a protracted process, the factory was fully demolished in 2023, clearing the way for a new warehouse and distribution center on the redeveloped land.
This closure marked the end of a century-old chapter in Fair Lawn’s industrial history, transforming a symbol of sweet nostalgia into a site for modern logistics.
