The Riverdale Diner, located at 3657 Kingsbridge Avenue in the Riverdale
The Riverdale Diner, located at 3657 Kingsbridge Avenue in the Riverdale/Kingsbridge section of the Bronx, NY, was a classic American diner and beloved neighborhood institution for over 50 years.
History
- Operated since at least the 1960s (some sources date it back to the Lyndon B. Johnson era).
- Owned and run by George and Anna Kaperonis, a family business that became a community staple.
- Featured a large seating capacity (over 100), booths with mini jukeboxes, a counter, expansive menu (breakfast all day, burgers, desserts like banana foster French toast), full bar, private parking lot, and a welcoming, diverse atmosphere reflecting the neighborhood.
- Known for exceptionally friendly and attentive service—staff who remembered regulars’ names and usual orders, warm greetings that made everyone feel like family, generous portions at reasonable prices, and its role as a true community gathering spot for families, teens hanging out after school, locals catching up over coffee, and reliable late-night visits.
- Particularly popular among students from nearby Manhattan College—just a short walk from the dormitories—where it served as a go-to spot for late-night study breaks, post-game meals, affordable breakfasts before class, and casual hangouts with friends.
- Underwent renovations after an earlier fire, giving it a more modern look while retaining old-school diner vibes.
Closure
- Temporarily closed during the COVID-19 pandemic.
- Reopened briefly in early 2022.
- A kitchen fire on April 11, 2022, damaged the restaurant (two firefighters were injured but the fire was contained).
- Initially, owners planned to reopen and renovate, with signs posted saying “Closed for renovation.”
- However, it never reopened, remaining vacant for years.
- In 2023, the property (owned by the Kaperonis family via Snowcap) was put under contract for sale.
- By September 2025, demolition was approved, and the site is set to be redeveloped into a Raising Cane’s Chicken Fingers restaurant—the chain’s first in the Bronx.
This closure completes a drastic change in the Manhattan College student experience, as the Short Stop Diner also has closed. It is just fast food now, it seems. No surly waitresses. The bars? Gone. The Terminal, Pinewood, Dorney Malones and Characters have also been lost to history.
