Ruth “Memaw” Hargrove and Memaw’s Diner

Stainless Steel Exterior and Memaw’s Sign (light is burned out, just like Memaw)

Ruth “Memaw” Hargrove, born 1932 in Lufkin, Texas. Learned to cook over a wood stove during the Depression. Married a truck driver in ’52, raised 4 kids in a double-wide, and fed half the county on Sundays after church.

Opened the original Memaw’s Diner in 1968 in a converted gas station on Highway 59. Famous for her “3-Napkin Biscuits” and refusing to serve decaf after 9 PM

1968 – Memaw opens in a 12-stool cinderblock shack. Neon sign flickers “OPEN” 24/7.

1974 – The diner adds the renowned “Pie Case of Destiny” — locals spin a wheel for a free slice.  Local vagrant Wilshire was especially fond of the gooseberry pie.

1987 – Survives the local Lufkin tornado, however, only the jukebox and coffee pot are left standing.

In June  of 1999, Grandson Jake takes over after Memaw passes peacefully in the kitchen, her famous gravy still warm on the stone.  Jake keeps the grease and adds Wi-Fi.

After many years of resistance to modern times, Jake Hargrove relents to the pressures of Elon Musk’s slick persona, and buys Starlink internet.  He adds a Wifi hotspot for patrons in the shape of a tabletop Juke Box.  Insert a quarter and the Wifi is enabled for 15 minutes.
