This small-town diner, located at 255 Main Street, offered classic American-style dishes like burgers, sandwiches, breakfast items, pizzas, and generous portions in a cozy counter-service and takeout spot. It operated until around 2024, as indicated by reviews and listings, and has since closed permanently.
Behind the scenes, though, 2023 and 2024 were tough. Food costs spiked. Staffing a rural restaurant with reliable cooks willing to work for $17–$19 an hour became nearly impossible. The couple’s teenage daughter, who had been their most enthusiastic server, left for university in the fall of 2023. Winter traffic slowed to a trickle; some weeks they barely broke even. They kept the doors open through sheer stubbornness and the goodwill of customers who paid with twenties and told them to “keep the change, you need it more than I do.”
The end came without fanfare. The last Facebook post, dated March 14, 2024, read: “Thank you Bothwell for 5 amazing years. It’s been a privilege to feed you. We are closing our doors for good this weekend. Come say goodbye if you can.” The lights went off for the final time on St. Patrick’s Day 2024. By April, the sign was down, the booths were sold on Kijiji, and the space sat empty, waiting for the next dreamer..
Yet in Bothwell, people still talk about it. Old-timers miss the way Darren always remembered how they took their coffee. Parents remember bringing kids there after minor hockey games, letting them spin on the counter stools while eating grilled cheese cut into triangles. Someone still has a faded red Boomtown Diner T-shirt folded in a drawer.
